Rockingham Race Meeting

It doesn’t seem long since I was writing the first blog of the season after Oulton Park, as BaTSport embarked on their inaugural race weekend. Now, six months later the final round of the Caterham R300 Championship has been and gone and what a weekend it was.

As BaTSport regular Paul O’Neill returned to his BTCC ITV commitments it left the door open for some new drivers in the team for Rockingham. With four BAT cars in action around the International Super Sportscar circuit Doug and Harry had their work cut out for them. Joining our seasoned regular David McGilvray were David McAnany, Bill O’Brien and Keith Ashworth.

Friday 5th October saw the boys take to the track for a day of testing, as good weather shone down. Again welcomed by nice weather the next day, the BaTSport squad headed out for qualifying on a damp track, with some good results ahead of race one. David McGilvray led the way in BaT 4, as he lined up 18th on the grid. Behind, Keith slotted into P22, with Bill behind in P25 and David P26.

An action packed race one saw each of the four drivers enjoy thrills and spills as they battled their way to the chequered flag. A brief loss of position at the start saw David McGilvray brush off the attentions of his rivals as he improved on his starting position to P16. Slightly adrift, the Turn One banking proved no match for BaTSport new boys Bill and David number two, as the pair enjoyed some fierce battles with one another lap after lap. A strong showing for Keith allowed him to hold station in his starting position as others swapped and changed around him.

Another sunny yet chilly start on Sunday morning led towards race two and the final race of the 2012 season. The BaTSport quartet lined up as they finished on Saturday as the red lights diminished. Thundering towards the challenging Turn One banking the foursome weaved their way through the pack.

A fearless drive saw David McG wrestle his way to 12th place, as he worked his way towards the finish; however as the end of the race neared he landed in 15th place for his final sweep past the chequered flag in 2012.

Behind, another gallant drive from the second of our David’s saw him make up four places from his starting position to cross the line a respectable P20. After some thrilling competitive action with friend and BaTSport team-mate Keith, Bill later made a trip to the gravel trap, whilst Keith got caught up in a collision after a solid performance on his BaTSport debut.

The BaTSport team are now reflecting on their debut racing season, and can happily look back over 2012 with pride. A big thank you to everyone from the whole team for your continued support during the season; remember we still have a number of track days on the calendar for this year so we hope to see you soon.
