March 2014 Spa Report
Our weekend March Spa double header event has become a firm fixture on the BookaTrack calendar for the last few years. The opportunity to drive this magnificent F1 circuit at a weekend is certainly one too good to be missed. In recent years we have experienced the best and worst of conditions, with 24°C sunshine in 2012 and snow in 2013. Therefore this year we were again hoping for two days uninterrupted track time.
Our trusted staff team of fourteen dedicated track day and motorsport enthusiasts arrived on Friday in anticipation of one of the hardest working weekends on the calendar. The eclectic mix of event organisers, instructors, pit lane control, race control, photographers and mechanics were looking forward to the 'work hard play hard' weekend that we have become accustomed to. Some of whom would return home on Monday with fond memories of their first drive of the circuit and a sore head from the previous night's festivities.
From the start of Saturday's track day it was clear that the weekend was going to be exceptional. The driving standards on Saturday were amongst the best I have ever known with minimal driving complaints and not a single stoppage all day. This was even more amazing given the changeable conditions during the middle part of the day. Sunday was a slightly busier day with much drier and sunnier conditions. Again driving standards were excellent with only a few short stoppages that were quickly cleared by the excellent recovery staff.
As with all of our Spa Francorchamps track days the paddock had an exciting mixture of track day cars including Porsche, Ferrari and Caterham. Included in these was our arrive and drive Porsche GT3 on its first outing. The lucky hirer enjoyed two fantastic days of track driving ably assisted by chief instructor Stuart Jones. At the end of the day Jonny even managed to get a few laps, taking our junior members of staff, also known as the '25 club' (which apparently due to a technicality I am not allowed to join!) for some passenger laps.
Overall an amazing weekend was had by all; with better than expected weather and the best of driving etiquette. It is a real joy to see so many smiling faces throughout the weekend. Sadly, we don't get to return to Spa again until July, but have added another date on 30th July for those of you who missed out on 14th July or just can't get enough of this amazing venue.
Our arrive and drive GT3 on its first outing at Spa, BookaTrack instructor Joe Crook enjoying his job, Pat Jennings driving his new track toy and the classic 'Eau Rouge' shot.
