Spa-Francorchamps July 2013Our previous Bookatrack trip to Spa involved us wearing all the clothes we owned and battling with the snow that eventually got the better of us! The latest trip a couple of weeks ago could not have been further from that. The weather gods were on our side this time, some may even say it was a little too hot!
For a few of the BaT staff our Spa trip started the previous week when Speedworks owner Christian Dick, BaT Platinum member John Gilbert, Jonny and myself raced in the Funcup 25 hours of Spa. What an experience that was, my first flying lap into Eau Rouge at 1am will be something that stays with me for a very long time. We all had a fantastic time but more importantly finished the race, it may not have been the result we hoped for due to accident damage within the first hour and alternator problems during the night but we survived!
Monday morning was a very bleary start as we were up early to get set up for the two days, as usual it was all hands on deck. Sarah and Jonny had taken the decision to move the summer Spa dates by a couple of weeks so we were not there after the GT Spa 24 hour race thus guaranteeing us the F1 pits. Unfortunately Mr Ecclestone had other ideas and wanted the F1 paddock club above the pit lane recanvased so we were relegated to the old pits once again. On the plus side its closer to the fuel station and you get to look at Eau Rouge, one of the best corners in the world for two days! Most of the Funcup teams had vacated the garages over night, the planned delayed start and the now incredibly efficient sign on team of Sarah and Amy it was a smooth and stress free beginning to the day.
Our instructors had a busy first day introducing some customers to Spa for the first time and reminding those that were returning to some of the circuit tricks. I was once again given the role of chief instructor liaising with Clive up in race control to ensure from an operational side the event ran as smoothly as possible. Judging by the feedback we were getting, only a couple of red flags and the few trips I had to make up the pit lane to deal with driving standards the system is working well. Some of the tastier cars that were on the first day gave us a few issues but with accurate reports from customers and Clive in the tower this was quickly dealt with before any incidents occurred.
The Bookatrack fleet of Caterham hire cars were fully booked for the event providing an easy, hassle free option to people wanting to enjoy the circuit without the logistical chore of getting their own car out there. The cars and some customer cars were well looked after for the two days by our very own boy band; Doug, Harry and Danny! (Junior mechanics with the name Tom can apply now to complete the full McFly team)
The two days were gloriously hot for Spa and team BaT catering did a fantastic job of keeping us all fed and watered providing a great meeting point at lunch time giving us opportunity to catch up with you all.
As is now tradition the last night saw the BaT staff let their hair down with a BBQ party that yet again produced some interesting memories and stories, most of which we are still too embarrassed to relive!!
The summer Spa trip is one of our busiest events of the year and a logistical nightmare for Jonny and Sarah in the office. Yet again they produced a fantastic event that is a real highlight in my calendar as Im sure it is in yours. They and the BaT team have spent years improving and growing the trip I just cannot believe its over already. Fear not as our next epic adventure abroad is only a week away as we head to the legendary if a little daunting Nordschleife!!
See you at a Bookatrack event soon!
The beautiful and very expensive Porsche 962 having a shakedown before the 'Silverstone Classic', Arnaud's Funcup that had been racing in the 25 hours the previous day, the classic La Source shot and Andy Bartles with his fan club!
