Meet The BaT Team - Mike WildsIt was a garage in Chiswick High Road that initially fuelled my passion for motor sport. In my youth I used to visit a garage called 'The Chequered Flag'. They ran a couple of Formula Junior racing cars called Gemini's which they designed and built in house.
One weekend I went with them to a race meeting held at Brands Hatch, it was this trip that totally changed my life. I got out of the transporter and heard the race engines, saw all the different race cars, felt the atmosphere and my future was decided.... I wanted to be a race driver!
At the end of 1964 I eventually managed to save enough money to purchase a small clubmans type race car for £280! I started racing this little car in May 1965 at a 750 Motor Club race meeting on the old original Snetterton circuit and after an almighty scrap during the race with a man called Cyril Lyford, I managed to finish on the podium in 3rd place.
My second and third races, were both held at Silverstone and they resulted in a 2nd place followed a few weeks later by my first ever race win.
Many years of struggling to find sponsorship saw me luckily progressing through Formula 4, Formula Ford 1600, Formula Three, Formula 5000 then eventually driving in a few World Championship Formula One
Grand Prix races for Team Ensign and BRM.
Following my all too short foray into F1 I drove in various British Series including the Aurora AFX Formula One/Formula Two Championship, winning the F2 title in 1978, the Thundersports Championship driving Can-Am Lola T530's, the British Open driving a Williams FW07C F1, the British Touring Car Championship and so on. I have been incredibly fortunate over the years, racing single seater's, touring cars, Group C, Can Am, British GT plus having the pleasure of racing all over the World including Monaco and the Le Mans 24 hour race seven times.
During the 1980's I drove in the World Sports Prototype Championship for Ecurie Ecosse winning the Teams C2 World title with them in 1986. I also raced Chevron sports racing cars in the Uk winning 6 RJB Group 6 titles during the 1990's. More recently I have been racing in the Classic Group C Series in a Porsche 962 and in 2011 I was a works Mazda UK driver in the British Endurance Championship.
All this experience has allowed me to build a successful Performance Driving Tuition business throughout the UK and Europe.
I have been working with BookaTrack for some time now giving tuition on many of their Track Days.
I have to say what a pleasure it is to see how drivers progress following instructional sessions on track. I really enjoy working with the BookaTrack team. In my opinion Jonny and Sarah run one of the best Track Day companies around and there is always a great atmosphere in the Paddock and Pit Lane.
Hopefully I will have the pleasure of giving many of you tuition in the future, in the meantime, do stay safe on track and have a fun 2013 track day season with BookaTrack.
