2012 - A year in the life of a track day organiserNow the track day season is over, I finally get chance to reflect on the amazing year 2012 has been. In the twelve years I have been organising track days I can't remember a year where I have worked or laughed harder. The combination of UK and European track days, car shows, race meetings and a part time MBA has meant very few days off, but I have got to work with lots of different people and make new friends.
One of my personal highlights has been the Iberia trip back in February. Jonny and I were delighted that the trip had filled on only our second time of running it. With the help of our staff team and the Iberian sunshine the week long event was a huge success. Staying in five-star hotels whilst away with work and sitting by the pool on your day off is not really in keeping with the 'motorsport lifestyle' I have become accustomed to! The first night I had to sleep in a random travel tavern by the side of the motorway after the trip was a real come down.
Our platinum membership scheme has continued to grow throughout the year - with another increase in membership for 2013. It has been a real pleasure to see so many familiar faces at track days and getting to know members has made it feel like the early days of BookaTrack, when many customers came from the car enthusiast community Jonny had been involved in. Some platinum members even feel confident enough to call me by nick names (hello Ade) and Linzi Roadnight has compiled a comprehensive list of where the membership card will grant you access!
In August I was also lucky enough to get time away from the sign-on desk and get out on track in one of our new R300 race cars. Sadly, this has been something I have had very little time to do in recent years. Both myself and Amy (Dick) managed to drive Croft for a couple of sessions under the wonderful tuition of Simon Mason. The experience was amazing and whilst I don't think I will be applying for my race licence just yet, I will definitely be repeating it next year. It also made me further appreciate the value of ARDS tuition on track days. Within a few laps I was a quicker, safer and more confident track driver.
I cannot reflect on this year without mentioning our staff team at BookaTrack. Our mixture of full time, sub-contract and volunteer staff all work tirelessly to ensure that events are run to the best possible standard and customers enjoy their track driving experience. Special mention has to go to our workshop team who are usually the first and last staff members at the track. Bringing the Caterham preparation and transport in-house was seen as a huge opportunity for the business. Doug, Harry and their new addition Dan have risen to the challenge and continue to amaze us with their dedication.
Overall a fantastic year, I look forward to doing it again in 2013!
