Meet the BaT Team - David BaileyIt is time to introduce another member of the BookaTrack team. Say hello to David Bailey, race instructor extraordinaire. David is one of our most experienced instructors here at BaT, and has been a valued member of the team for the last nine years.
David first joined us at an event at Elvington Airfield near York in 2006, when one of our Chief Instructors, and good friend of David's, Stuart Jones required some assistance for a small corporate event. Naturally, David agreed and we haven't let him escape since.
Known affectionately by the BaT team as 'DB', David is one of our A-Grade ARDS instructors, however he has on occasion stepped into the role of Chief Instructor, to deliver the morning briefing and run the day. 2014 was a busy year for him, when we began to run our Caterham Academy car for the first time. David was assigned the duty of instructing half a dozen Academy drivers who were preparing for the 2015 Caterham Academy Championship. The BaT academy car quickly became his home, as he tried to get them up to speed as quickly as possible. "It was hard work, but very satisfying," said DB. "I'm pleased to say that one of the drivers went on to win the championship outright in 2015," he added.
As with the rest of the BaT team, motorsport has always been a part of David's life, but where did it all begin? "Both my grandfather and father were racers, so ever since being in a pushchair I have been around motor racing and various circuits," said David.
"I started competing myself in 1985 with a methanol fuelled Mini Special Saloon in Hillclimbs and Sprints. I shared this car with my father for a couple of years before we purchased our first Formula Ford. We continued sharing the car on speed events up and down the UK.
"When dad decided to retire in 1996, I decided to follow in his footsteps and go circuit racing, sticking with the Formula Ford," he said.
David has enjoyed many highlights over the course of his racing career, including winning the 2007 North West Formula Ford Championship outright, breaking the class record for Formula Ford 1600 at Harewood Hillclimb (the longest permanent hillclimb course in the UK) and Aintree Sprint course - both of which he has held for 11 years now!
Motorsport and the motor trade has always played a part in David's life, even in his 'regular' job. Since leaving school he worked for many years in the sales industry at various car dealerships. "I began on the YTS course (that shows how long ago it was for those of you old enough to remember)," said David.
With nearly 30 years experience working for Austin-Rover, MG, Mitsubishi and finally Mini and BMW, David decided to turn his attentions to instructing full time in 2013. When he's not sat alongside our loyal customers here at BaT, David runs his own small race team that prepares, maintains and transports three Formula Fords for drivers who compete in the current Northern Formula Ford 1600 Championship.
Aside from his race team commitments, David divides his instruction time between BaT and working for MotorSport Vision (MSV) at his local circuit, Oulton Park. David's duties for MSV take much the same format as his role here at BaT, acting as Chief Instructor for them on occasion. David also gets the thrill of providing high speed passenger rides for MSV, behind the wheel of their JPLM sportscar.
Despite his busy nature, David usually joins us on our European days, particularly our prestigious Spa events, as well as many of our UK days. He is definitely a permanent fixture here at BaT, and we look forward to him joining us around the UK and Europe again in 2016.
